Vanta Partners' client is looking for an engineering manager.
- An eng manager to lead and grow the eng org at an early-stage Sequoia-backed developer tools startup
- With this tool, people simply provide a clear description of the product they want to create, and from this tool automatically generates and deploys customizable multi-platform apps and a production backend
- Additional context: senior eng I have spoken to are particularly drawn to our technology (literally today the tech lead for twitter.com described us as “easily able to nerd snipe senior engineers” with our tech). We have created a "domain specific language" plus "compiler and interpreter stack" for connecting that language to React Native. I'm sure every company tries to position itself as the best on many axes, but I particularly wanted to emphasize to you that we score super highly on being technologically compelling to senior candidates.
We value diversity, so would greatly appreciate diversity in the slate of of candidates where possible (especially gender and race), but of course we will evaluate all candidates equally and in compliance with the law.
Role requirements
Eng Manager
Must have:
- Has managed 5+ engineers previously
- Is seeking scope for recruiting and org building
- Believes in the Sutro vision and in Owen as the founder
Nice to have:
- Experience with React / DevTools / Developer Platforms / JS ecosystem, or on a "Platform" team within a 100+ person tech company
Senior ICs
Must have:
- Strong at JavaScript / TypeScript
Nice to have:
- React / RN experience
- Full stack experience
- Developer Platforms / Open Source library contribution experience
Interview process
I feel strongly we should go from first meeting to offer within a week (i.e. 5 work days, 7 calendar days), except in cases where candidates really cannot move that fast.
Eng Manager
My ideal scenario is that the candidate is obviously qualified (verified through our network and past performance), so we can keep very light on interview questions assessing general management abilities, and focus on them being aligned with our mission and the role.
My default is:
- An initial 30-45 minute conversation to combine information gathering and selling the company
- A follow up call that combines general questions on both sides with a few behavioral questions
- A call with my partner at the VC company for a 2nd opinion
- A 30 minute call with the whole eng team for questions from the group / feeling out the connection on both sides
- A meeting or phone call to deliver offer
- As an informal part of the process, I also expect to have dinner / coffee with them after making the offer for relationship building. If they live in another state and are a strong candidate, I'm willing to fly out to them for this.
Location (for all roles)
Nice to have:
- SF Bay Area
- (for context, for those of us in the Bay Area we meet in a coworking space 2 days a week currently and that's nice to do where possible)
Must have:
